Research Reveals That Mobile Makes Up Majority of Time Spent Online

Mobile Makes Up Majority of Time Spent Online

Mobile has become a mainstay of the mainstream and is now dominating our digital activities. A new comScore report showed that 60% of all digital time was spent on mobile devices and 51% of all digital time was spent on mobile apps during the month of May. This is an increase from 50% one year ago. Clearly, mobile has redefined the online experience. That’s why marketers must take mobile into account when targeting their digital ads to audiences. The Wall Street Journal reported more on mobile’s digital dominance.

This mobile majority has major implications for both brands and Web publishers.

Brands that have been hesitant to pursue mobile ad opportunities will need to realize the power and potential of mobile marketing. And with mobile usage continuing to soar, brands and marketers will need to fine tune their targeting to reach these consumers spending so much of their time on smartphones, tablets, and app activities.

From a Web publishing perspective, publishers will need to seek ways to generate more revenue from mobile ads since they usually demand much lower prices than traditional banner ads on desktop sites. Their lower price point has been a big reason for the rise of native advertising, which is believed to be a much more effective advertising vehicle on mobile devices.

In addition to these sky-high mobile time findings, the comScore report showed some stunning statistics on the reach of mobile in the month of May alone. Not only did 96% of the mobile time spent on digital radio occur on mobile devices, but more than 90% of the mobile time spent on messaging, maps, and photos also took place on mobile means. And more than 70% of total social networking time transpired on mobile devices.

It’s important to note that social media is also a part of the mobile conversation. In fact, overall mobile engagement for social media has soared by 55% in the last year alone, with Facebook accounting for 24% of all mobile time spent in May.

With mobile going strong, it’s time for businesses, marketers, branding firms, and Web publishers to make mobile more of their focus.
